Short & Sweet

This week was a bittersweet one… my youngest son turned 11! We had a great day celebrating the life of our middle child with peanut butter cake, a trip to the park, and lots of fun board games. We all took some time off from work and school and made wonderful memories together!

This weekend however, I’m getting back to the grind and want to share a precious moment that I shared with my sweet little girl earlier this week!

Life is so Fun
and Sleep is so not

My 5 year old daughter is a bundle of energy, always on the go and bedtime has never been her favorite moment of the day. It’s nearing 9pm on a Thursday and this sweet little girl has already been tucked into bed a handful of times.

As I’m sitting in bed working on some things, I hear the pitter-patter of her stinky little feet, yet again. She crawls up onto the foot of my bed and says “Mommy, I don’t like that I have to go to sleep”. We had a small discussion about how she doesn’t like missing out on things and wants to stay up, because life is so fun and sleep is so not. We then talked about how our bodies need sleep so we can grow, stay healthy, and get strong. She accepted it for the moment and I walked her back to bed.

Sing a Song to me…

Tucking her in, she asked if I could snuggle for one minute, which of course I agreed to. I asked if she would like a song as well, she nodded. That night, I sang a song that I don’t typically sing. I sang “You are My Sunshine”. Her face lit up and she asked me to sing it again, proclaiming “I love that song!”.

After doing this for a handful of minutes, while she continued to ask for it over and over again… I told her I would sing it once more if she sang it to me first. She replied with “Can I sing you a song I made up?” to which I agreed. I listened intently to the beautiful lyrics my daughter made up just for me.

“You are my mommy, my only mommy. You are my mommy, you are my mommy. I know you love me, I know I love you. So please don’t ever go away.” (Sung, somewhat to the tune of “You are My Sunshine”)

You are My Sunshine!

My heart instantly melted. We sang the original song once more together, then she turned to me and said “Mommy, you sang with the most beautiful voice.” We exchanges a few more gentle words, hugs and kisses were given, and I left her to drift off to sleep on her own. As tired as I was, my heart was completely full in that moment.

This child can wear me down, push my buttons, and test her limits. However, she can also express love in the most amazing ways. She really is my sunshine!

Littles are only little for so long. I hope you’ve been able to soak in some sweet moments with your precious little ones this week!
